Drama, Confusion as WAEC Releases Conflicting Results-August 30, 2011

CANDIDATES WHO WROTE WAEC EXAMINATION( MAY/JUNE 2011) ARE ADVICE TO RE-CHECK THEIR RESULTS AGAIN

From Aisha Wakaso in Minna
There was confusion yesterday
in Minna, Niger State, as
candidates who sat for the May/
June
Senior Secondary School
Certificate Examination (SSSCE)
had two conflicting results of the
same exam released to them, in
the last two weeks, by the West
African Examinations Council
(WAEC).
The examination body had, two
weeks ago, posted on its website
results of the examination.
However, the council’s office in
Minna went ahead at the
weekend to post another set of
results which were totally
different from the earlier set
released thereby forcing the
candidates to troop to the state
WAEC office to ask questions on
the authentic result.
When the candidates discovered
the conflict in the results, which
mostly had worst grades than
the first one posted, they
gathered themselves in large
numbers and went to the state
branch of the examination body
to verify which of the two
results was authentic.
THISDAY spoke to some of the
candidates at the WAEC premises
yesterday. They said the
examination body graded some
of them on subjects they did not
register for neither did they sit
for them.
According to one of them who
craved anonymity, he had
conflicting results from
Government Secondary School,
Minna. He said in the first result,
he had “B” in two subjects, “C” in
six subjects, including English
Language and a “D” in
mathematics.
But when he went back to print
another copy of the result, he
discovered that the council had
changed the results and had
posted “B” in one subject, “C” in
three subjects, while he made
“D” in three others, an “E” and an
“F” in another subject.
Unlike his performance in the
first result that the council had
posted, the candidate recorded
C5 in English Language and D7 in
mathematics, but in the new
result, WAEC posted D7 and F9
respectively for the candidate in
the two subjects.
Another female candidate from
Government Girls Secondary
School, Minna, did not only have
her result changed, she was
given grades in two subjects she
did not sit for. Aside from this,
her grades in English Language
and mathematics were equally
different from the former result
released.
When THISDAY contacted the
Branch Controller of WAEC in
Minna on the issues raised by
the candidates, he said the
problem affected almost all the
candidates and advised that all
enquiries on the matter should
be directed to the head office of
the council.
“Please you may have to go to
our headquarters in Lagos. This
is not a local problem and there
is no branch controller in other
affected states that can talk to
you over the course of the
problem,” he said.
But on a second thought, the
controller, who declined to
disclose his name, added: “All I
can say is that, the problem has
been rectified. Candidates can go
to the cafe and re-check their
results; they will see that what
they have on our website now
tallies with the initial results
released.”

Atiku Reacts To last UN Abuja Office Bomb Attack- August 30, 2011

Tuesday, 30 August 2011
The Former Vice-President, Atiku
Abubakar, has condemned the
suicide bomb attack on the UN
office in Abuja, maintaining that
mindless violence is counter-
productive to peace and
progress.
Reacting to the latest bomb
incident in the nation’s federal
capital in a press statement, the
former vice-president noted that
indiscriminate violence against
the innocent could not solve any
problem in any society.
According to him, there was no
alternative to dialogue and
peaceful resolution of conflicts.
He explained that, as an
international institution,
committed to the peace and well-
being of humanity, the United
Nations staff should be
protected at all times rather than
being put in harm’s way for
whatever reason.
Abubakar argued that violence
against the innocent desecrated
the principle on the sanctity of
life, which had been preached by
all religions of the world.
He warned that uncontrolled
violence could paralyse the
society, thereby, undermining
the pursuit of happiness.
On the appalling new security
challenges currently confronting
Nigeria, the former vice-
president had welcomed the
involvement of international
experts to unravel the extent,
nature, dimension and global
connection to these incidents of
bomb attacks, which were
relatively new in Nigeria.
He said the seeming paralysis in
the nation’s response to these
challenges called for global
collaboration because Nigeria
was dealing with a hitherto
unknown crime of this
destructive scale.
In his words, “our security men

Oil Tanker Explosion, 5 reported dead in Benue-August 29, 2011

The Oil Tanker Explosion had put everybody in panic

An oil tanker, belonging to Con
Oil Plc yesterday, exploded into
flames killing five people, while
about 20 others were in critical
condition with severe burns at
the Okpoga General hospital in
Okpokwu Local Government Area
of Benue State.
The explosion, it was gathered,
occured when some residents of
the town approached the scene
where the tanker had
overturned after skidding off
the road with fuel gushing out
from it.
Following this, the tanker was
said to have caught fire and
exploded in the process, killing
three people instantly, while two
others died at the hospital.
Chairman of the local
government area, Mr. Robert
Idoko, who was on hand
alongside the state Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman,
Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, to ascertain
the level of damage caused by
the explosion, said most of the
victims were mostly women and
children.
He described the incident as
unfortunate, adding that:
“Everybody is in shock with
what happened but we shall do
our best to ensure those who
are alive in the hospital get
adequate treatment.”
He further urged the state
government as well as other
Nigerians to come to the aid of
the victims. However, efforts to
get the state Commissioner of
Police to comment on the
incident proved abortive as he
was said to be indisposed.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker
representing the local
government area in the state
House of Assembly, Hon. Olofu
Ogwuche, has called on the
federal government to impress
on the contractor handling the
Otukpo-Enugu road to hasten the
completion of the project
because “as it is, the durability of
the Otukpo-Utonkon-Okpoga-
Ugbokolo rural road constructed
by the Governor Gabriel Suswam
administration can no more be
guaranteed.”
“All motorists coming from the
East and those from Makurdi
now use the road as a by-pass to
and from Enugu.

Please enter your comment below
And it is obvious that the design
and construction of the road did
not take cognisance of this kind
of heavy traffic and that
accounts for this kind of
unfortunate accident,” Ogwuche
said.
Also, the Vice-Chairman of the
council, Hon. Sunny Ebute, called
on the Federal Government to
speed up the repairs being
carried out on the Otukpo-Enugu
road, stressing that the contract
for the construction of the road
was awarded four years ago.

UNICAL Shut As Student Protest Collegue DeathUNICAL Shut As Student Protest Collegue Death

August 28, 2011
News
By John bosco Agbakwuru,
Calabar
University of Calabar
(UNICAL) was yesterday shut
after students violently
protested alleged death of
three colleagues on campus
as a result of insecurity.
The authorities closed the
institution for two weeks,
asking the students to
vacate the campus
immediately.
According to the students,
insecurity in the university
led to the killing of two of
their colleagues by armed
robbers on campus.
They said the robbery attack
came two weeks after a final
year law student was killed
on campus by unknown
persons suspected to be
cultists.
The registrar, Dr. Julia
Omang, in a statement said
the university authorities
rose from a meeting
yesterday with a decision
that the students must
‘vacate’ the campus
immediately.
“At an emergency meeting
of the management of the
University of Calabar held
this morning August 27
2011, a decision was taken
for students to proceed on a
two week mid-semester
break. Accordingly, students
should vacate the campus
before 12 noon. All students
should ensure compliance
with this directive.”

To avoid more casalities, fire
fighters visited Apete and
blocked the road.
They directed motorists and
residents to find alternative
routes home.
The rain also led to loss of
property worth millions of
naira which included houses.
At Eleyele, some houses,
including a storey building,
were submerged. The
storey building was sinking.
It was not clear if the
occupants were not swept

Drogba Injured as Chelsea Late Show Sinks Norwich -August 27, 2011

August 27, 2011
Sports
lONDON-(AFP) – Chelsea left it
late to clinch a 3-1 victory
over 10-man Norwich that
was marred by a serious
injury suffered by Didier
Drogba at Stamford Bridge
on Saturday.
Andre Villas-Boas’s side were
in danger of being held to a
draw by newly-promoted
Norwich when Grant Holt
punished a mistake from
Blues goalkeeper Hilario to
cancel out Jose Bosingwa’s
opener.
Drogba was stretchered off
soon after when he landed
heavily following an aerial
collision with Norwich
goalkeeper John Ruddy.
But Lampard ensured
Chelsea won for the second
time in three league games
under Villas-Boas when he
drove home a spot-kick with
eight minutes remaining
before Juan Mata marked his
debut following his move
from Valencia with a goal in
the final moments.
“He (Drogba) lost
consciousness completely on
the pitch. It looked pretty
nasty,” Villas-Boas said.
“We are just waiting for the
full exams on his concussion
and hopefully nothing is
wrong.”
Chelsea’s sixth minute
opener came from an
unlikely source as Portugal
right-back Bosingwa netted
his first goal since November
2008 with a powerful long-
range effort that flashed in
off a post.
That should have been the
springboard for a dominant
Chelsea display, yet Holt
equalised in the 63rd minute.
Holt was given a large
helping hand by Hilario —
playing in place of the
injured Petr Cech — as the
Portuguese stopper came
way off his line in a failed
attempt to catch a Wes
Hoolahan cross and Holt was
able to hook into the empty
net.
It got worse for Chelsea
moments later when Drogba
landed in sickening fashion
following his collision with
Ruddy and the game was
stopped for seven minutes
while the Ivorian was
carried off wearing a
breathing aid.
However, Lampard got the
second goal from the spot
after Ruddy was sent off for
bringing down Ramires and
Spain winger Mata, on as a
substitute, struck with a
curler deep into stoppage
time.
Blackburn missed two spot-
kicks and then paid the
penalty as Everton sneaked a
1-0 win at Ewood Park.
Rovers squandered a chance
to take the lead early in the
second half when Tim
Howard saved Junior
Hoilett’s penalty after Mauro
Formica made the most of
minimal contact from Ross
Barkley to win the spot-kick.
Formica missed from the
spot himself — shooting
against a post — after being
fouled by Phil Jagielka in the
final minutes.
Everton made the hosts pay
for those misses when
Spanish midfielder Mikel
Arteta stroke home a 90th
minute penalty
controversially awarded by
Lee Mason for a Chris Samba
challenge on Marouane
Fellaini.
Swansea were held to a 0-0
home draw for the second
successive week as
Sunderland held firm in a
dour struggle at the Liberty
Stadium.
Brendan Rodgers’ newly-
promoted team drew with
Wigan seven days ago and
found it equally hard to
break down the Black Cats’
defence, with Scott Sinclair
going closest with a shot
that hit the bar.
Wigan maintained their
unbeaten start as a fine
double by Argentinian
striker Franco Di Santo
secured a 2-0 win over QPR.
Di Santo – tripling his total of
goals for the club to only
three goals in 32
appearances since joining
from Chelsea for £2 million
last August – struck in each
half to give Wigan their first
win of the season after two
draws.
Wolves remain undefeated
after Mick McCarthy’s team
ground out a 0-0 draw at
local rivals Aston Villa.
McCarthy’s men won their
opening two league matches
against Blackburn and
Fulham and showed plenty
of grit to keep Villa at bay in
a hard-fought but ultimately
uninspiring midlands derby.
Liverpool host Bolton later
on Saturday, while on
Sunday champions
Manchester United take on
Arsenal, Manchester City
travel to Tottenham.
Also on Sunday, Newcastle
play Fulham and West Brom
host Stoke. Vanguard reports..

Obasanjo Replies IBB:" A Regret At 70s is a Regret To The Grave" .August 19, 2011

Ex Nigerian President Olusegun
Obasanjo, Wednesday, reacted to
the comments about him made
by former President Ibrahim
Babangida saying that he [IBB]
was being foolish as his
comments were not well though
out.
According to him, former
President Babangida should be
pitied and shown sympathy
rather than anger or
condemnation as he was being
foolish at the age of 70.
Obasanjo who spoke with news
men in Abeokuta during the visit
of an American Team on an
inspection of the Olusegun
Obasanjo Presidential Library
[OOPL] said that his initial
thought was not to respond but
that on second thought he
decided to reply IBB so that he
would not consider himself wise.
He said “well, normally when I
read these things I don’t believe
them. Yesterday when
somebody phoned me and said
this was said, I said don’t believe
it. He said check on all the papers
and I said get me all the papers,
they got me the papers and I
read; it’s a little bit unlike
Babangida.
But if Babangida had decided on
becoming a septuagenarian,
that he will be a fool, I think
one should probably do what
the Bible says in Proverbs
chapter 26, verse 4. It says
don’t answer a fool because you
may also become like him.
“When you go to the same
Proverbs chapter 26, verse 5, it
says answer a fool so that he will
not think he’s a wise man. So, I
am now torn between which of
the two verses I should follow in
this respect. Some of the things
he said unfortunately were not
well thought-out.
“For instance, he talked about
our energy. When I was the
military head of state, I built
Jebba dam; built Shiroro dam, I
prepared the foundation of
Egbin plant which President
Shagari completed and
commissioned. That time the
money we were making was not
up to the money Babangida was
making annually for his eight
years and yet we built two dams.
Because it was important, you
know that power is the driving
force for development and for
any developing country. But
since the building of Egbin
power plant, until I came back in
1999 there was not any
generating plant for almost 20
years and Babangida spent eight
years out of that. Now, he has
the audacity to talk about
anybody; I think that is
unfortunate.
“I also read where he said in his
time, he gave the dividends of
democracy and at the same time
he regretted. When I read that,
well I said Babangida should be
pitied and shown sympathy
rather than anger or
condemnation because the old
saying says a fool at 40 is a fool
forever and I would say a regret
at 70 is a regret too late. Well a
regret at 70 is a regret to the
grave.
“Then as elected president, I built
Papalanto, Omotosho, others and
I started five what they called
Independent Power Stations
which were stopped for two and
a half years. Now that the
present administration has
started building a new power
project at Uyo. As a country,
Nigeria should be adding
nothing less than 1,500
megawatts annually. South Africa
with a population of 50 million
generates 50,000 mega watts.
Nigeria with a population of
about 165 million we are not
generating, we as at 1999 met
1,500 mega watts before we
took it up to 4,000 mega watts.
What we started they are now
allowing it to go on. I believe if
they continue with the
programme that we left, In
another two years , we will get
to 10,000”.
Further straightning issues, the
former Presdent confirmed that
he in fact blocked the sale of
Nigeria Airways saying such a
sale would have put the Nigeria
nation in further debt.
He said “I blocked the sale of
Nigeria Airways, not that I
attempted to block the sale of
Nigeria Airways. When I was
military head of state, Nigeria
Airways had 32 aircrafts, by the
time I came back as elected
president of Nigeria, Nigeria
Airways had only one aircraft.
“One of the 32 was a wide
bodied aircraft, they have all
gone and the report on which
we worked is here, the amount
of money we will have to pay if
Nigeria Airways was sold, what
we would get out of it is less
than 10 percent of the debt we
have to pay. That will be the debt
Nigeria tax payers will have to
pay; that will not be the way to
run the affairs of this country. I
won’t run my own affairs that
way, so I opted for liquidation.
So, it was bankrupt, it was
liquidated; in which case
whatever you gain from
liquidation which is also a form
of sale, it means the burden will
be shared by all the creditors
and everybody. So, if I owe you
10 dollars and what I sell when I
am liquidated is two. That’s what
you get. So, I did not allow
normal privatization or sale
because it would have put very
heavy burden on Nigeria.
“So, Nigerians should know that
and in fact my administration
should be commended for that.
It’s not that I did not allow that
sale because the law establishing
it is sale and liquidation is also a
form of sale”

Chelsea Football Midfielder, Mikel Obi Dad's Car Discovered

Kidnappers of
Mr Michael Obi, father of Chelsea
star Mikel Obi, on August 17, 2011 contacted
the family.
Michael Obi, a retired
government staff, who recently started a transportation
business in Jos was kidnapped
on Fri. evening
On Tuesday 16th August 2011 in Jos
Police advocated to the public
for details that could assist in
solving his mysterious
disappearance. However , on the
same day, it turned out that the
family received 2 calls from his
abductors, who initially informed
them that he had been removed
from Jos.
“They called mummy (Mikel’s
mother) and told her that we
should not bother looking for
Daddy in Jos because he had
been taken to Lagos,” a family
source informed the press.
A couple of hours later another
call came in, providing family
members the exact location of
the car which Mr Obi was driving
before he went missing. Tony,
the eldest of the Obi children,
established that the car was
discovered in Jos, but refused to
state where. However, Mikel’s
mother contradicted this,
confirming just that the car was
found due to a tip gotten.
“Somebody who had an idea of
the make of the car contacted us.
And based on that information
people were sent out to the spot
and confirmed the information
to be correct. That is the much
that has happened and that’s the
much we can say for now until
tomorrow,” she said.
Micheal’s car was found close to
Kwali Falls in Riyom LG Area of
Plateau State, Nigeria. Stay on with NigeriaTopStories for updates.

I'm remarry soon: Gen. Ibrahim Babangida

August 17, 2011 –The Ex- Military
President, Gen. Ibrahim
Babangida has reveal
his intention to marry a new
wife following the demise of his
wife, Dr. Maryam Babangida.
In an interview with
Vanguard ahead of his 70th
birthday today, Gen. Babangida
debunked claims that he secretly
married a wife about four
months ago asserting such a
marriage existed only in the
imagination of some section of
the media.
In the wide ranging interview,
Babangida linked the military
intervention led by Gen. Sani
Abacha that sacked the interim
government of Chief Ernest
Shonekan to the agitation of civil
society even as he justified his
support for Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo in the 1999
presidential election as the best
decision at that time. He rated
Obasanjo a success based on the
fundamental parameter of
unifying the country which he
said informed his selection at
that time.
On speculations that he had
secretly married, “I have not re-
married. You are not the only
one who heard. A close friend of
mine heard and came to the
house to find out. I took him
around to all the rooms a wife
would have been if I re-married.
It is the soft sell media that
would like to make huge sales
that come up with that type of
story,” he told Vanguard.
But in a session with selected
newsmen in Minna yesterday
Babangida gave notice of his
readiness to marry.
“Yes, I will get a new wife, no
name yet but I know what I
want and who is coming into
this house and one thing I
cannot also tell you now is when
exactly she is coming in.”
Gen. Babangida who was full of
life and radiating with smiles
throughout the interactive
session said he gives glory to
God for successfully navigating
the turbulence that characterized
political office especially as a
Military President.
He, however, ruled himself out
from further partisan political
pursuit saying:
“I am now 70 years. By 2015, I
will be about 75 years so at that
age, what would I still be looking
for. Count me out. That time, I
will be in Minna to attend to
people who call on me for
political and other consultations,”
the former military president
said.
Recalling his saddest moments in
life, Gen. Babangida said it was
when he lost his bosom friend
simply identified as Lt. Col
Mohammed in 1974 who he said
died in a crash and also the
death of his wife, Maryam.
He, however, recounted his most
joyful moments to be the day he
got married and when he was
appointed the military president
for the country after a successful
military coup.
Gen. Babangida described the
public execution of his bosom
friend and colleague, Gen. Vatsa
following allegations of a coup
plot as the most traumatizing
decision ever taken in his life. He
prayed never to find himself in
such a position again.
According to him, “it was a
military law which could not be
amended. We all got caught up in
the coup Decree of 1976 which
gave no room for an alternative
but only death through public
execution. If I tell you that it was
not traumatizing, I must be lying
and I pray I will never find
myself in such a situation again.”
The former military president
also touched on other National
issues such as the amendment of
the constitution of the country,
the re-occurring June 12 issue
and the way forward for the
country.
Jonathan congratulates IBB
President Goodluck Jonathan
yesterday congratulated
Babangida on the occasion of his
70th birthday which was
yesterday. A statement by Dr Reuben
Abati, prayed God Almighty to
bless him with “many more
years of robust health,
prosperity and continued
distinguished service to our
nation.”“Looking back over the
past 70 years, I am sure that
you, your family and indeed
your larger family of associates
and admirers do have cause to
be grateful to Almighty God for
having granted you a life of
great accomplishment and
abiding fulfillment.”
“You did not only rise to the
pinnacle of your chosen career
in the military, you also rose to
become President of Nigeria for
eight years,” President Jonathan
wrote. Vanguard

Before the case was adjourned

the case file and its notices be
forwarded to the Director of
Public Prosecution through the
Chief Registrar.
Vanguard recalls that Imo State
Police Command had earlier
mustered “a team of sound
medical doctors from the Federal
Medical Centre, Owerri, to probe
Mrs. Ogbonna’s alleged medical
feat” and several tests had been
conducted on the woman, her
husband and the seven
children.”
An impeccable source in the
Command told Vanguard that
from the tests so far conducted,
there was no proof of a recent
pregnancy, adding that the
woman was not also pregnant at
present.
“Tests have shown that she has
a large fibroid in her womb. Her
virginal hymen is still copious. It
is not possible that she given
birth to that number of children
with the hymen remaining the
way it is,” the police officer said.
The officer disclosed that the
blood group, Rhesus Factor and
genotype of Mrs. Ogbonna and
her husband were “O”, D+ and
AA respectively.
“These were not found in four
of the children. Medical evidence
does not support her claims.
Police was not shown were she
delivered the babies and there is
no proof that she has ever
breast fed any baby before,” the
police officer concluded.
The story about the woman and
her seven babies came to light
when Vanguard published an
interview on the alleged medical
feat and has followed the story
as events unfolded.
To also establish the maternity of
the children, Vanguard
management offered to conduct
a DNA test on the woman and
children, and the samples were
taken last Monday in Owerri for
medical analysis and it is
expected that the result would
be ready in about two weeks. by
